Is There A Cure For Insomnia?

cure for insomniaFirst lets be sure we all have the same idea about insomnia and what this word means. According to Dictionary.com "insomnia" means:

Inability to obtain sufficient sleep, esp... when chronic;
difficulty in falling or staying asleep; sleeplessness.

So insomnia is simply a word that defines the symptoms, it doesn't tell us what causes insomnia. To find a cure for insomnia we should at least learn what the cause is. There will be different cures for insomnia depending on the cause.

Here is another (tongue in cheek) definition of insomnia:

Insomnia is a a state in which you feel exhausted, unwell, irritable and unable to concentrate due to an inability to get enough sleep. No-one can understand how bad insomnia is unless they have suffered from it. The cure for insomnia is elusive.

What Causes Insomnia

Insomnia can be caused by a number of things but it is mainly caused by stress and lifestyle factors. It can also be caused by medical conditions including sleep apnea.

1. Lifestyle factors that cause insomnia include:

  • Too much coffee during the day, especially late in the afternoon.
  • Nicotine use, either in replacement therapy or the real thing.
  • Irregular bedtimes and sleeping late on non work days.
  • Being exposed to bright light in the hour before bedtime.
  • Not winding down to bedtime.
  • Taking work to bed.
  • Jet Lag
  • Side effects of medication
  • Sleeping pills rebound

2. Other Causes of Insomnia

  • Pain, such as osteoarthritis, backache etc.
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Partner Snoring
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Noise
  • Too hot or too or cold
  • Sleeping in the same bed as your partner.! Yes really! Be like royalty and sleep in separate rooms- or at least in separate beds.

Finding a Natural Cure For Insomnia

Given the above, an insomnia remedy involves lifestyle adjustments and implementation of good "sleep hygiene". This means taking care to do everything that you can to get a good night's sleep and ensuring you do nothing that prevents it.

It also means trying to reduce the effects of stress in your life. We can't get rid of stressful events but we can learn how not to let stress affect us to the extent that it causes sleeplessness and other health problems. Learning how to relax and how to control anxious thoughts is the first step in finding a remedy for insomnia.

Have a Checkup

You should go to see your doctor for a check if you have had insomnia for a while. This is just to ensure you do not have anything more than stress and anxiety underlying your insomnia.

Please don't let your doctor give you sleeping pills though, these should never be the first line of attack when seeking to cure insomnia.
