Entrainment
Binaural Beats
Binaural beats are a form of brainwave entrainment using two separate sounds that combine to form one sound
inside your brain.
One benefit that is often mentioned is that in order for the brain to create a binaural beat, it must use both
hemispheres of the brain (right and left), which is claimed to produce "hemispheric synchronization".
Binaural beat audios must be listened to with headphones.
Binaural beats or binaural tones are artificially induced rhythms that the brain produces when
exposed to two separate sounds one in the left and the other in the right ear. The beat that is created is the
difference between the two frequencies. For example, if 300 Hz is played in one ear and 310 Hz in the
other, then the binaural beat would have a frequency of 10 Hz.
Stereo headphones must be used to create this effect because a different sound must be played into each
ear. The frequencies used must be below 1,000 hertz and the difference between the tones must be 30 Hz or
less. If not the effect will not occur and the two sounds will be heard as two rather than one different
beat.
Binaural beats are better known than other brainwave entrainment tones but they have been found to be less
effective than isochronic tones. For this reason we do not use
binaural beats alone.
Harmonic Box X
Harmonic Box X is a tone-based brainwave entrainment method described by James Mann in his book, Awakening
Mind 1. It has become quite popular in recent years.
The method is unique in that it incorporates both monaural and binaural beats, in a harmonic formation.
Because it uses binaural beats it requires headphones.
Our Alpha Relax audio uses Harmonic Box
Monaural Beats
Monaural beats are similar to binaural except that the brainwave entrainment sound is formed outside the
brain. This means you do not need to wear headphones.
Isochronic Beats
Isochronic beats do not rely on the interaction of two tones to form a beat. Instead, a beat is formed manually
using audio modulations. They have been found to be very effective in inducing entrainment.
You do not require headphones to listen to isochronic beats. Our sleep induction audios use isochronic
tones.
